RE: AB 329 (Weber) – Support

Dear Assemblymember Weber:

I am writing in support of AB 329, the California Healthy Youth Act, which will strengthen existing law to ensure California students receive HIV prevention and sex education that is accurate, comprehensive and inclusive.

Today, sexual health education is not meeting the needs of California students. HIV prevention education is mandated by state law, but the information is outdated and often lacks the broader context of HIV prevention, such as promoting healthy relationships and preventing unintended pregnancy. Further, current law does not address the growing need for comprehensive sex education in California. Many of our schools are denying students critical information on such issues as contraception and sexual orientation. CWLC supports your effort to integrate comprehensive sex education into the HIV prevention mandate and update the law to reflect today’s understanding of HIV and AIDS, which will equip our teens with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their health whenever they become sexually active.

Additionally, I applaud AB 329 for requiring sex education materials include students of all sexual orientations and genders, as well as address adolescent dating abuse and healthy relationships.

By fixing the gaps in current law, AB 329 will make California’s student population healthier and safer and improve students’ academic outcomes. For these reasons, I support AB 329.
