Why do girls need athletics in K-12 schools? Girls who play sports during their kindergarten through high school years are less likely to become pregnant and are more likely to graduate and earn a higher wage later in life than girls who do not play sports. Youth athletics are often cited as a first step toward future success, and the communities most in need of these advantages are those that are predominately low-income and made up of women of color. Young girls in low-income areas are often denied equal opportunity on the playing field or they receive unequal treatment or funding for their sports.
Amy Poyer of California Women’s Law Center and Kim Turner from Legal Aid at Work hosted an informational training webinar about Title IX and other laws that apply to equality in athletics at K-12 schools. Let’s work to create a level playing field for all girls today so they can thrive for a lifetime!
