These briefs were filed in the California Court of Appeal, the California Supreme Court, multiple federal District and Circuit courts, and even the United States Supreme Court. The issues addressed by the briefs included Title IX campus sexual assault and cyber harassment, women’s reproductive health, domestic violence, LGBTQ employment discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, and transgender veterans.

The issues addressed by the briefs included women’s reproductive health, domestic violence, LGBTQ employment discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, and discriminatory enforcement of prostitution offenses.
Landmark Bipartisan Justice for Victims Act Signed into Law (2016)
Senate Bill (SB) 813, the Justice for Victims Act, introduced by Senator Connie Leyva, eliminates the statute of limitations for rape and related crimes in California. It was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in September 2016.
Gender Discrimination in Education – Sexual Assault and Harassment (2016)
This is a brief overview on gender discrimination in education, focused specifically on sexual assault and harassment. This short guide covers the facts and includes resources on what Title IX is, and how it applies to the Clery Act and the Campus SaVE Act.

S.T.O.P Teen Dating Violence resources are related to the October 2015 presentation in which teen dating violence is discussed, why it is a problem, the responsibility schools play in addressing teen dating violence under Title IX, and its relation to California state law.

This document is intended to provide a summary of the Office for Civil Rights “Dear Colleague” letter issued on April 4, 2011, which provided special Title IX guidance on sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools.

This resource explains the pervasiveness of teen dating violence, how schools need to address the issue, schools’ legal duties, and information regarding Title IX.
Murder at Home Project (2005)
The Murder at Home Project sought to transform criminal justice, community, and media responses to intimate partner violence to ensure that these crimes are taken seriously and addressed appropriately. In 2005, CWLC released its policy report Murder at Home: An Examination of Legal and Community Responses to Intimate Femicide in California.

Protections for Campus Sexual Assault Victims May Roll Back
Yesterday, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos signaled her intention to roll back protections for campus sexual assault victims put in place by the Obama Administration in 2011. The Department of Education’s actions are likely to discourage survivors from reporting sexual assaults and could prevent rapists from being held accountable.

Assembly Bill 557 (Rubio) – CalWORKs Domestic Violence
The California Women’s Law Center supports AB 557, which would strengthen aid to domestic violence victims who are applicants or recipients of CalWORKs assistance. Read AB 557 Support Letter AB 557 was approved by the Governor on October 12, 2017.

International Women’s Day – March 8, 2017
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a collective day of global celebration but also a call for gender parity. IWD honors the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. But the unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to their male counterparts, women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and physical safety are threatened every day.
CWLC Celebrates Women’s History Month
March is a month of reflection and appreciation for women, but it is also a month of action. Please join us as we celebrate the gains women have made since our country was founded and know that CWLC will be on the frontlines to stop any attempt to force women backward or diminish our possibilities. The California Women’s Law Center hosted a Distinguished Guest Speaker Series with Erwin Chemerinksy and Michele Goodwin of UCI School of Law on February 22, 2017 at the Feminist Majority Foundation in Beverly Hills. Their presentation titled “Forecasting Reproductive Health and Rights in the Era of President Trump” was incredibly insightful and well-attended. Thank you, Dean Chemerinsky and Professor Goodwin!
